YouTube is making picture-in-picture (PiP) free globally, and expanding its reach to more users for non-music videos.
PiP Feature is Now More Widely Used
According to YouTube, picture-in-picture (PiP) mode is now being rolled out globally. Previously, this feature was only available to users and Premium subscribers in the US. With this new update, that restriction is removed, making the feature available to a wider audience.
Premium Requirement Removed
With this change, users without a Premium subscription will also be able to use the PiP feature. However, this is offered within certain limits. Free users will be able to use PiP mode for long videos other than music on iOS and Android devices.
No changes for premium users.
The current usage continues for Premium subscribers. These users will continue to use the PiP feature for both music and other content. Premium Lite subscribers, however, can only use this feature for non-music content.
How does PiP work?
The picture-in-picture (PiP) feature transforms the video being watched into a small window. Users can move this window anywhere on the screen. This allows other applications to be used simultaneously while YouTube remains open. To activate PiP mode, simply exit the application; the video will automatically switch to the small window.
The distribution will be done in stages.
YouTube will not roll out the feature to all users at once. PiP support will be implemented gradually. Therefore, it seems possible that some users will access the feature later.
