The Freelander brand has returned to the automotive world after a long hiatus. The first model of this new era, the Freelander 8, was developed in a partnership between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover. The model represents the brand’s new generation SUV approach.
New Model and Launch Process
The Freelander 8 is based on the design language of the previously introduced Concept 97. Therefore, the vehicle largely retains the general lines seen in the concept. The model is planned to be introduced in China in the second half of 2026, after which it will be launched in various markets.

The vehicle has now moved beyond the concept stage. It has been announced that durability and rigorous environmental tests have been completed. The Freelander 8 is currently in the production validation process. This stage is known as the final step before mass production.
Design Details
The Freelander 8 features an angular design reminiscent of classic off-road vehicles. The body structure consists of straight lines, giving it an upright stance. A closed panel design is used at the front, complemented by rectangular LED headlights. Simple, sharp lines stand out on the sides. A LiDAR sensor located on the roof showcases the vehicle’s technological infrastructure from the outside.
Driving Technologies
The model features the Huawei ADS 5 driving assistance system. This system works in conjunction with a LiDAR sensor and the i-ATS terrain intelligence system. The vehicle analyzes different road and terrain conditions and adjusts driving settings accordingly. This system was specifically developed for use in variable terrain conditions. The vehicle also has a central control system powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 processor.
Platform and Engine Options
The Freelander 8 is built on a new generation platform that supports various powertrains. Fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range extender versions are planned. In the Chinese market, it is expected to come with an 800V electric architecture, which is said to offer 350 kW fast charging support.
